Spotify Launches Personalized AI DJ for Next-Level Music Experience

At Spotify, personalization is at the heart of what we do. Fan-favorite playlists like Discover Weekly and our annual Wrapped campaign deliver the right piece of music for that exact moment in time and connect listeners with their next favorite artist using AI technology. Now, Spotify is taking personalization to a whole new level with the DJ, a personalized AI guide that chooses what to play for listeners.

The DJ is an AI feature that delivers a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists listeners might enjoy. It sorts through the latest music and looks back at old favorites, possibly resurfacing a song that hasn’t been listened to in years. It reviews what listeners might enjoy and delivers a stream of songs picked just for them. What’s more, the lineup is constantly refreshed based on feedback.

The DJ button can be tapped to switch up the vibe if listeners are not feeling it. The more they listen and tell the DJ what they like (and don’t like), the better its recommendations get. The DJ is like the very best of Spotify’s personalization, but as an AI DJ in listeners’ pockets.

To create the DJ, Spotify reimagined the way users listen on the platform. The DJ knows listeners and their music taste so well that it scans the latest releases they might like or takes them back to nostalgic playlists from last year. The powerful combination of Spotify’s personalization technology and OpenAI technology provides a lineup of music recommendations based on what Spotify knows listeners like.

Spotify’s music editors use generative AI to provide insightful facts about the music, artists, or genres listeners are listening to. The generative AI tooling allows editors to scale their innate knowledge in ways never before possible. Spotify also acquired Sonantic, a dynamic AI voice platform that brings to life stunningly realistic voices from text.

Spotify partnered with its Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan, to create the voice model for the DJ. His personality and voice resonated with listeners and resulted in a loyal following for the podcast. His voice is the first model for the DJ, and Spotify will continue to iterate and innovate as it does with all its products.

The DJ is rolling out in English starting today for Spotify Premium users in the U.S. and Canada. Listeners can find the DJ in their Music Feed on Home in the Spotify mobile app on their iOS or Android devices. They can tap Play on the DJ card, and Spotify will do the rest by serving a lineup of music alongside short commentary on the songs and artists picked just for them. If they are not feeling the vibe, they can hit the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen to be taken to a different genre, artist, or mood.

Spotify is always looking for innovative new ways to improve its users’ listening experiences to meet their needs, so stay tuned for more.
